The Sound of Music
Scenic design
Concept
When the director and I took over this program in 2022, this school hadn’t had a classic musical since 2017. Our goal was to change perceptions that the classics are not worth doing. I believe we succeeded. My main goal was to keep the mountains present in every scene.
The Map
It was always my attention to bring more of the history into this telling of the classic story. I did so by utilizing real Nazi propaganda which I modified to include the definition of the Anschluss as well as highlighting the Edelweiss which is a pivotal motif within the show.
The Von Trapp Villa
The house needed to be large and sprawling, while still being able to transition off stage for other moments. Therefore, the house splits into four sections- The front door, the main platform, the round stair unit, and the grand stairs.
The Gardens
When it came time for 16 Going on 17, I knew I wanted to recreate the gazebo. I did so by using the round stairs from the house, and flying in a topper for the gazebo. This freed up the choreographer from dealing with posts, and freed up some backstage space for me.
